There are a number of differences between a fiberglass door and a steel door. Each door has their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to durability, energy efficiency, security and heat transfer. When you do select a door, there is no right or wrong answer. Because you need to decide on what matters most to you in these different categories, and chose the one that is best for you.
Durability Goes to the Fiberglass Door
Fiberglass takes the cake when it comes to durability. Fiberglass does not dent, warp or rust. It also does not need to be painted as often and it can handle extreme weather.
Steel on the other hand easily dents. The door will also start to rust if it gets scratched and the metal is exposed. Compared to a fiberglass door, steel doors have a shorter lifespan.
Energy Efficiency is Higher with a Fiberglass Door
Fiberglass doors and steel doors both offer great energy efficiency. The fiberglass door is just a little bit better though because of its foam core.
Steel Doors Offer More Security
If you are looking for a door that can handle an attempted break in or any other intrusion, a steel door is the way to go. Steel may dent easier than fiberglass, but a steel door can withstand more force than a fiberglass door.
Heat Transfer is Less Dangerous in a Fiberglass Door
Fiberglass doesn’t absorb the heat and cold like steel does. Steel is going to collect the heat in the air or any heat from direct sunlight it may be exposed to. This makes a steel door a hot piece of metal on a hot day, one that can seriously injure those that come in contact with it.
On the opposite side, it also freezes in extreme cold. A cold steel door isn’t as dangerous as a hot steel door, but just don’t stick your tongue to it on a dare.
Price is Lower With……..
Okay, here is the one you have all been waiting for. All of the above categories are important, but money talks – right? So between a fiberglass door and a steel door, it’s the steel door that is the cheapest.
