You may think that once your summer flowers have died in your window boxes that it is time to clean them out and leave them empty until spring. Don’t resign yourself to this!
Your window boxes can be used for so much more than just as planting boxes for your summer flowers. Sure the flowers make your home look really nice in the summer, but your window boxes can hold more than just flowers to make your home look nice in the fall also.
From Flowers to Window Leaves
Fall leaves are the flowers of autumn, so they are the perfect choice when it comes to replacing those spent summer flowers.
To install the leaves, purchase a bush of leaves at your local craft or dollar store. For those of you that don’t know what a bush of leaves are, it looks like a mini bouquet. Don’t worry; you will know it when you see it.
Next, fluff the leaves outward so that each leaf can be seen individually and there is plenty of space between leaves. Finally, simply push the bottom part of the bush where the stems are all attached into the dirt in the window box.
You will want to purchase enough leaf bushes to completely fill the window box leaving no empty spaces. When you are done, you will have a box full of colorful leaves not only adding color to your house, but also decorating it for fall.
Don’t Forget the Fall Produce
Fall’s produce is just as colorful as its leaves are and can also add a nice splash of color to your window boxes, once the flowers have stopped blooming.
Want to know the best thing about using fall produce in your window boxes? All you have to do is place them in the box, no planting or watering required.
Great items to use:
- Fake apples
- Dried corn
- Corn Stalks (leaning against the window box)
Fake grapes with autumn colored leaves
If you have a lot of space between the dirt in your window box and the upper edge, you may want to add something on top of the dirt so that the produce sits higher. That way you won’t need quite as much of it to get it to show over the top of the window box and add the color you are aiming for to your home.
