Energy-efficient windows are a hot item at the moment. If you’ve spent much time browsing through brochures and catalogs, you have probably noticed environmental certifications on products.
These certifications are important since they show that a product has met high standards when it comes to environmental impact. The Green Seal® Certification is one of the most credible certifications that various products and services can earn.
Renewal by Andersen® and its parent company Andersen Corporation are proud to be the first window manufacturers to receive Green Seal Certification. So whether you’re purchasing sliding windows or double-hung windows from us, you can be sure you’ve made the right choice.
The Green Seal Mark
Being certified by Green Seal means a product or service has met or exceeded leadership-level, life-cycle-based criteria for sustainability. This is determined through Green Seal’s science-based approach, which follows the international standard for environmental labeling programs.
Green Seal implements a set of guidelines to help them assess how a product or service protects human health and the environment. This includes the following:
-
Toxicity limits
-
Indoor air quality
-
Chemicals of concern
-
Waste reduction
-
Manufacturing processes
-
Water and energy use
Green Seal Standard for Windows
Green Seal has product-specific requirements to guide them in the certification process. For windows, the following requirements are taken into account:
-

-
Performance – the ratio of the product’s VLTC over its SHGC must be greater than 1.
-
Environmental Requirements – measures U-Value and air leakage; product manufacturer should also be able to demonstrate that the product frame and sash materials are not made with heavy metals like lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium.
-
Packaging Requirements – corrugated box used to package the product must contain at least 25% post-consumer material.
-
Consumer Education Requirements – pre-sales education materials and installation instructions must be provided to consumers following a specific set of requirements.
