Why You Need to Perform Window and Door Inspections

Every home has energy envelope: an enclosure made of the attic, exterior walls and fenestrations (skylights, entry doors, and windows). The insulation in these components is intended to prevent heat transfer, which should result in minimal heat gain during hot days, and minimal heat loss during cold days. Less heat transfer means less indoor heating and cooling requirements, and therefore, more energy savings. Leaks that allow air and water to go through windows and entry doors results in heat loss, as well as uncomfortable indoor spaces.

Performing Window and Entry Door Inspections

First, look for signs of leaks. Your windows and surrounding walls may have water stains that indicate a problem with the weatherstripping and/or window sash alignment. Before you consider replacement windows, check the condition of the hardware, perform adjustments as instructed in the care and maintenance manual, and check again for leaks. Look out for cracks and signs of damage.

If you have double-pane window glass, condensation can be an indicator of a problem. You shouldn’t worry if condensation forms on the interior or exterior glass surface. It becomes problematic if the condensation is between the glass panels, as this is a sign that the seal between the glass panels is broken. If the same glass panel has insulating gas fills, it may already have dissipated.

If you notice problems that can’t be fixed by prescribed troubleshooting steps, contact your window contractor for repairs. If the window is still within warranty, then the window repair costs should be minimal to none. Windows beyond repair will require replacement. While windows can be replaced during any season, you should have them replaced as soon as possible to prevent high energy bills.
