Today, windows are replaced for many reasons - energy efficiency, reduction of maintenance, poor or lack of operation, wood rot, and to change the appearance of a home. In all of these cases, the one question that needs to be asked is, "How do I want my windows or home to look when the project is complete?"Just because you have a particular style of window in your home today, does not mean when replacing that window, you have to go back with the same style. For example: in a breakfast nook in which there are a group of double hung windows mulled together, a bank of casement windows may be more attractive. By eliminating the double hung window check rails, you have created a more unobstructed view. You'll no longer need to peek above or below the meeting rail of the two sashes. The casement window will also provide the opportunity for more ventilation.Another example of a change in style that is very popular is changing the double hung windows over the kitchen sink to an awning window. Again, you've eliminated the check rail right at eye level, and provided a window that is much easier to operate.Because a window over a sink can have its own personality, don't be afraid to be different!

An important concept to remember is that fewer, larger windows will always give you more light, more ventilation and cost less. When replacing a bank or group of windows, consider using fewer, but larger windows for enhanced visibility.Below are before and after pictures of a breakfast nook over- looking the 15 green of a golf course. Look at what a little value engineering did for that room!Windows can be very eclectic, so don't get locked in to the same old, same old. Contact us for a free home estimate.Jay L.
